Responsibility

There's a lot of stuff posted and shared via Face Book that makes my eyes roll, some make me giggle and some make me upset. One of the recent shares that fired me up was a thumbs up and push to have basic living skills taught to up coming adults in school. It provoked a reaction in me not because I'm a parent or teacher or anyone directly affected but because I have observed over the years layers of generations not able to handle life. They are equipped to land a good paying job which is great but they can't account or take responsibility for money they spend with out thought. Many can not cook or clean up after themselves or know how to handle difficult situations that arise.
I always thought life skills were taught or learned from their home environment, where basics were at least introduced early on and hopefully those seeds planted would one day blossom by the time they became adults. Over the years, perhaps due to both parents working or single parent home or just because the new train of thought in parenting is to feed, clothe and keep entertained and kept stocked with all material things rather than sit down with each child and teach them the basics of living. It's the mind set of the upcoming adults to make a lot of money that way you can get someone else to cook, clean and keep track of your money.
Schools offer so much more these days than they did when I was growing up. I don't feel putting more responsibility on teachers is the answer and if you add all the basic living skill courses into the curriculum you  basically making the school system responsible for you children. I also believe  that older teens on the cusp of wanting to be independent should be encouraged to do so by parents or care givers not doing everything for them. So many are able to get and maintain a job which is good but I think everyone both male and female should be able to cook, clean and keep track of their own finances.
