Right Beside Me All Along

I had a rose between my teeth

But someone snatched it free

I had my head inside a dragon’s mouth

Then slightly burned as it yawned and released me

I was crouched along a darkened door

As it opened without my touch

I laid gifts of treasured sentiments in the light

But my humbled offerings then was not enough

I wept as I laid prostrate

Until I died and re-awoke

My gifts were all beside me

Along with fallen rose petals of hope
